Intellectual Property Registration – Geographical Indication

State of Assam have successfully got the Geographical Indication (GI) (a type of Intellectual Property) registered for GAMOCHA  or GAMOSA.

Meaning

The word gamosa is derived from the Kamrupi word gamsaw, the cloth used to cover the Bhagavad Purana at the altar. The Gamusa has its original from either the Tai people or from other people in East and South-East Asia using similar article (Source – Wikipedia)

GAMOSA symbolizes culture and identity of Assam, has received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag from the central government, five years after the first application was made.

The Intellectual Property registration certificate, issued on Tuesday, have brought cheers to people across the northeastern state.

A GI is tagged to primarily agricultural, natural or manufactured products, handicrafts and industrial goods originating from a definite geographical territory.
